Also on Monday all PA 309 north traffic wishing to access I-81 at Exit 138 will be detoured to a temporary signalized intersection to use the PA 309 south ramp to I-81. *I-84 – Pike County – Last fall, PennDOT began a major rebuilding project on Interstate 84 between Exit 46 (Matamoras) and the New York line. Traffic has been moved to single lanes on the current eastbound lanes while the westbound lanes are completely removed and replaced. The primary need for this project is the ongoing failure of the existing pavement as a result of alkali silica reactivity (ASR). ASR causes the concrete pavement to deteriorate and lose its structural integrity through a reaction between the aggregate and the type of cement that was used in the early 1970’s during construction. Because of this ASR, the concrete forms a gel that may absorb water, expand and crack the concrete. Once cracked, the concrete loses its strength and deteriorates. The project is expected to cost $66.4 Million and is slated be complete by April 2016.
*I- 84 – Pike County - between Exit 46 (Milford) and Exit 34 (Lords Valley/Dingman’s Ferry) There is a single lane closure on I-84 West for two Bridge Deck Replacements. Anticipated completion - fall 2014.

There is currently a single lane pattern in place in that area as crews complete the drainage work. From July 2014 to October 2017, crews will rehabilitate nearly 8 miles of road, from Clarks Summit to the Wyoming County line. As part of the project, 8 bridges will be replaced or rehabilitated, turning lanes will be added or improved, new signals will be installed or upgraded and the entire stretch of highway will be repaved. There will be various traffic patterns set up throughout the duration of the project. Anticipated completion – October 2017.

Luzerne County:
*SR 309 - Blasting is scheduled for Monday, May 5. Traffic will be stopped for 10-15 minutes when they blast. As soon as the specific time is known, we will send out an alert to the public. Traffic is now in single lane patterns in the area and will remain in single-lane patterns until late fall. To ensure public safety, PennDOT is also imposing a ban on trucks over 10.5 tons that will be in effect at all times in the southbound lane and from 4 a.m. to 11 p.m. going north. This work is a $5.2 million safety enhancement project that will blast and remove portions of the rock in the area. By widening the rock cut, less water will flow onto the road, and more sunlight will be able to reach the road surface, thereby reducing the amount of ice on the road. Throughout the duration of the project, the speed limit will be reduced to 35 m.p.h. Two portable cameras have been installed to allow motorists to view traffic conditions before heading out and are available at www.511pa.com. 5/2 Update: Currently, the signs for the truck ban and the detour have not arrived, and PennDOT did not want to hold up the project any longer. Until the signs come in (and it is over 300 signs for a 26 mile detour
