McKean County PENNDOT Maintenance Organization welcomes you to our facts page. In 2004, the county celebrated its bi-centennial year. McKean County was created on March 26, 1804, from part of Lycoming County and was named for Governor Thomas McKean. It was fully and independently organized by 1826. Smethport, the county seat, was laid out in 1807 and named in honor of two Amsterdam bankers, Theodore and Raymond de Smeth. |

 | McKean County is an easy-to-reach mountain woodland recreation area. The region is full of high peaks as part of the Northeastern Appalachian Mountain chain with an abundance of streams and lakes. Amusement flourishes including state parks networked with snowmobile, skiing, all terrain vehicle, hiking, biking and horseback riding trails. McKean is one of the premier locations in the Northeast for hunting and fishing.[ ] |
 | McKean County’s population (2000 estimate) stands at 45,936 within an area of 982 square miles. McKean is home to 15 Townships, 6 Boroughs and the City of Bradford. One can traverse the county on either Historic State Route 6 or the Buffalo-Pittsburgh Highway, 219. Tourism includes the Historic Kinzua Bridge State Park or a visit to the Zippo/Case Visitor’s Center. McKean is home to the Bradford Regional Airport. |

PennDOT Snowplow | McKean County Maintenance District is headquartered at 300 Bingham Road in Cyclone, Pennsylvania. In addition to the main office we have four additional stockpile facilities that are strategically located through out the county in an effort to provide a quick response to emergencies and enhance our operational efficiency. These stockpiles sites are situated at Bradford, Eldred, Kane and Smethport. |

 | The PENNDOT McKean County Maintenance District consists of 382 miles of roadway and 242 bridges. It is maintained by a workforce of 45 permanent equipment operators, 8 full-time foremen, 4 mechanics, 1 Automotive Mechanic Supervisor, 1 tradesman helper, 2 maintenance repairmen, 4 clerical/technical staff, 1 clerical supervisor and 5 management employees. The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) as part of Council 13 of District Council 85 represented by members in Local 2116 and Local 2368 represent the rank and file employees. Our equipment fleet includes 22 dump trucks, 17 pickups/crew cabs, 6 front-end loaders, 2 graders, 2 backhoes, and a plethora of specialized highway equipment. |
