Indiana, Pa. - PennDOT Engineering District 10 announces the following schedule for road closures in association with the West Kittanning Bridge Replacement and 3R Project along Route 1038 in West Kittanning and Applewold boroughs and East Franklin Township, Armstrong County.
Pine Hill Road (Route 4025) will be closed to traffic from the Butler Road (Route 1038) intersection to Carter Street beginning March 17. Butler Road (Route 1038) will be closed between North Harrison Street/Fern Drive and Tarrtown Road/Allegheny Avenue beginning March 31. A detour using Route 268 and Route 422 will be in effect during the Butler Road closure, which is expected to last approximately six months.
The closures are part of the $16.2 million project to replace the bridge that carries Butler Road over the B&P Railroad. Though the detour was originally expected to last up to 516 days, project contractor Walsh Construction of Canonsburg has committed to having the new bridge open within approximately six months of the original bridge's closing. When opened, the new bridge will be three lanes - one downhill and two uphill.
The project includes road and signal improvements along Butler Road through the West Kittanning business district and paving on Pine Hill Road and Route 268 toward the Franklin Village Mall.
Utility relocation work on the road portion of the project has already begun. Traffic lanes will be widened, and an additional turn lane will be added. The intersections at Linde Road and Arthur Street will be realigned to meet at a plus-shaped intersection, eliminating one traffic signal in that area. A new traffic signal will be added at the intersection of Pony Farm Road.
Work on the road improvements will continue through the summer. Motorists should anticipate delays when traveling through the corridor. Motorists are asked to slow down and exercise caution when traveling through work zones.
