PENNDOT ANNOUNCES START OF WORK ON CLARINGTON BRIDGE PROJECT
Detour in effect beginning November 13
Jefferson County, PA (November 2) - PennDOT Engineering District 10 is announcing that work will begin on the Clarington Bridge deck replacement project on Monday, November 13, 2006. The Clarington Bridge carries Route 899 over the Clarion River in Barnett Township, Jefferson County, near the Forest County line.
Crews from Swank Associated Companies Inc. of New Kensington, the project's primary contractor, will work through the winter to complete the $1.26 million project, which includes removing the original deck and replacing it and jacking the beams to replace existing bearings. A new barrier and guide rail will also be installed as part of the project, which is expected to be completed by the start of the summer tourism season on May 24, 2007.
The bridge will be closed during construction beginning November 13, requiring a 30-mile detour along routes 36 and 66. It is scheduled to reopen May 10, 2007.
The project, originally scheduled for 2009, was accelerated after paving crews in August discovered that the deck was deteriorated beyond what was expected. The pace of deterioration necessitates that the work be performed this winter in order for the bridge to remain open on a long-term basis. |
