Indiana, Pa. - PennDOT Engineering District 10 announces that the Clarington Bridge, which carries Route 899 over the Clarion River in Barnett Township, Jefferson County, near the Forest County line, will reopen at noon Thursday, May 24, 2007.
The structure has been closed since November 13, 2006, while crews replaced the bridge deck.
"We made a commitment to the community to have this bridge reopened by Memorial Day, and we are pleased to meet that commitment," said District 10 Executive Joseph P. Dubovi III, P.E. "We thank the local residents and businesses for their patience during this project and its accompanying detour. The result is a long-term improvement that will benefit residents of local communities and tourism in the area."
The deck replacement project, originally scheduled for 2009, was accelerated after paving crews last August discovered that the previous deck had deteriorated beyond what was expected. The pace of deterioration necessitated that the work be performed through the winter in order for the bridge to remain open on a long-term basis.
Though the bridge will be opened to traffic, work will continue at the project site, and there may be periods when flag crews direct traffic. Motorists are asked to travel with caution through the work zone and obey posted speed limits.
Prime contractor for the $1.26 million project is Swank Associated Companies Inc. of New Kensington.
