Eastbound traffic will be detoured
Indiana, PA (February 23) - PennDOT Engineering District 10 is pleased to announce that construction activities will resume on Tuesday, March 1, 2005, for the Route 286 Oakland Avenue Safety and Mobility Improvement (SAMI) project in Indiana Borough, Indiana County.
PennDOT's prime contractor for the $2 million project, Plum Contracting, Inc. of Pittsburgh, PA, will begin to widen Route 286 by removing curbing and performing drainage activities. Because of the limited space in the area, a lane closure of eastbound Route 286 is necessary to allow this work to be conducted safely. The closure will begin on Tuesday and continue through May. The official detour for eastbound Route 286 traffic will be Rose Street to Wayne Avenue to Philadelphia Street.
As construction activities resume, motorists are advised to use caution, expect changing traffic patterns, lane restrictions and possible delays and to SLOW DOWN when traveling through the area. Motorists are also reminded to turn on their headlights when traveling through highway construction areas and that fines and citations are doubled in work zones. Work zone safety is everyone's responsibility.
The PennDOT SAMI project includes widening Route 286 to three lanes with a center turn lane and sidewalks between Fisher Avenue and Washington Street. Existing curbs, gutters and drainage will be upgraded. A new traffic signal will be installed at the intersection of Route 286 and Grant Street. In addition, the existing signals at 11th Street will be upgraded and a left-turn phase will be added in each direction. The project was made possible through a partnership with Indiana University of Pennsylvania, which contributed right-of-way and funding for the project.
The project will be completed this fall.
