PennDOT Updates SR 422 Mt. Chestnut Bridges Rehabilitation Project

PennDOT Updates the State Route 422 Mount Chestnut Bridges Rehabilitation Project in Butler County

Indiana – PennDOT Engineering District 10 is providing an update of the State Route (SR) 422 Mount Chestnut Bridges rehabilitation project over State Route (SR) 3007 and Little Connoquenessing Creek, located near the intersection with T-339 (Greenwood Drive/Heinz Road) in Butler Township, Butler County.

This $2.23 million bridge rehabilitation project of the eastbound and westbound bridges consisted of substructure and superstructure repairs and bridge approach work. In addition, the westbound structure received an epoxy surface treatment and the eastbound received a latex modified concrete overlay. The project began mid-July 2010.

Phase 1 began with lane restrictions in place to build crossovers and to switch traffic to both lanes on the eastbound structure to perform repairs on the westbound expansion dams, and approach slab and piers. Phase 1 was completed in October 2010 and traffic was switched from the eastbound structure to the westbound structure.

Phase 2 began in mid-October 2010 and included superstructure repairs on the eastbound structure until the winter shutdown in early December 2010.

In early Spring 2011, Phase 2 superstructure repairs resumed on the eastbound structure. At the end of August, a material failure of the latex deck concrete caused operations to stop on the deck until sampling, testing, and evaluation of the defective material occurred. Work on the substructure (under the bridge) including repairs and painting continued and was finished at the end of August.

In early September, PennDOT sent the material to be tested and evaluated. At the end of September, PennDOT requested that the contractor remove and replace the material.

The work to prepare for the traffic switch was not completed, pending testing of the materials, seeking alternative suppliers, and reapplying the latex deck treatment.

It is anticipated that the new latex deck will be placed over the next several weeks. Once the deck is cured, finish work will be completed and the bridge will be open to normal traffic. It is anticipated that traffic will return to normal patterns by the end of November. The actual completion date will depend on weather conditions during this time period.

This $2.23 million bridge rehabilitation project is being completed by BECDIR Construction Company.
