Welcome to Northeastern Pennsylvania! Here at PennDOT, we refer to the northeastern section of the state as PennDOT District
4-0. Our district covers six counties: Lackawanna, Luzerne, Pike, Susquehanna, Wayne and Wyoming.
District 4-0 contains some cities you might be familiar with - Scranton, Wilkes-Barre and Hazleton - along with hundreds of boroughs and townships such as
Milford, Montrose, Honesdale and Tunkhannock.
PennDOT District 4-0 maintains more than 3,600 miles of state roadways in Northeastern Pennsylvania. To put that into perspective,
if you laid out all the state roads in District 4-0 end to end, you'd have a roadway that would stretch from New York to Los Angeles
and then back to Texas!
The roadways in District 4-0 are made up of 216 miles of interstates, 202 miles of major primary routes such as U.S. Route 6 and
U.S. Route 11, and 3,222 miles of other state routes. There are also 2033 bridges maintained by PennDOT in District 4-0. It's a big
job taking care of all those roads yearlong, but we are committed to your safety... and may I also say, it's a job we truly enjoy!

PennDOT District 4-0 is deeply committed to making travel in Northeastern Pennsylvania safer for all of us. Safety Improvement Projects
include center line rumble strips to help prevent vehicles from drifting into the opposite lane, more reflectors and larger signs with bigger
lettering. PennDOT is also working with state and local police to develop target enforcement areas to reduce drunk driving and crashes. PennDOT
District 4-0 also has an extensive safety education program for teen drivers, mature drivers and everyone in between.
