 | Elk County PENNDOT Maintenance Organization welcomes you to our facts page. Elk County, named for the Elk that once lived throughout Pennsylvania. By the mid 1800s, their range was reduced to a small area in Elk County. The last native Pennsylvania eastern elk was killed near Ridgway, in 1867. The county was formed on April 18, 1843 from parts of Jefferson, Clearfield and McKean Counties. Ridgway, the county seat, was named in honor of a local land owner, Jacob Ridgway. |

 | Elk County is an easy-to-reach mountain woodland recreation area. The region is full of high peaks as part of the Allegheny National Forest where one can come to see the growing Elk herd, reintroduced to the area in the early 20th century. Amusement flourishes including state parks networked with snowmobile, skiing, all terrain vehicle, hiking, biking and horseback riding trails. Elk is one of the premier locations in the Northeast for hunting and fishing. |
 | Elk County’s population (2000 estimate) stands at 35,112 within an area of 829 square miles. Elk is home to 9 Townships, 2 Boroughs and the City of St. Marys. One can traverse the county on the Buffalo-Pittsburgh Highway, 219. Originally a timber industry giant the present day thriving industry in the County is powder metal, which employs a high percentage of the population. |

PennDOT Snowplow | Elk County Maintenance District is headquartered at 32 St. Leo Avenue in Ridgway, Pennsylvania. In addition to the main office we have five additional stockpile facilities that are strategically located through out the county in an effort to provide a quick response to emergencies and enhance our operational efficiency. These stockpiles sites are situated at St. Marys, Ridgway, Johnsonburg, Byrnedale, and Brandy Camp. |

 | The PENNDOT Elk County Maintenance District consists of 293 miles of roadway and 125 bridges. It is maintained by a workforce of 27 permanent equipment operators, 6 foremen, 3 mechanics, 1 Automotive Equipment Foreman, 1 maintenance repairman, 1 custodial worker, 4 clerical/technical staff, 1 clerical supervisor and 4 management employees. The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) as part of Council 13 of District Council 85 represented by members in Local 2123, Local 2368 and Local 2603 represent the rank and file employees. Our equipment fleet includes 17 dump trucks, 5 garage pickup trucks and 7 crew cabs, 6 front end loaders, 1 grader, 1 backhoe, 1 gradall and a plethora of specialized highway equipment. |
