  • Scope of Work
    • The Squirrel Hill Tunel, built in 1955, consist of two bores that pass through Squirrel Hill in Pittsburgh, PA, carrying two lanes of one-way traffic in each direction on State Route 376 (Parkway East). The tunnel consists of twin arch-shaped reinforced concrete bores that are 4225 feet long and approximately 29' - 4" wide. The roadway consists of two 12'-0" lanes, a 3'-9" barrier on the left side and a 1'-7" barrier on the right side. The last rehabilitation was done in 1983.
    • The proposed rehabilitation scheduled to begin in 2012 will consist of the following:
      • Repair concrete spalls
      • Tunnel walls
      • Cross passageways
      • Arched tunnel roof
      • Within the Portal Buildings
      • Exterior of Portal Buildings
      • Remove the existing tunnel ceiling to improve vertical clearance
      • Construct new drainage around Portal Buildings
      • Remove and replace bonded tunnel wall tiles
      • Repair cracks in concrete surfaces
      • Re-line the existing water line and provide new equipment for the existing tunnel fire hydrant system
      • Repair leaking expansion joints in tunnel
      • Upgrade Tunnel Safety Systems:
        • New temperature monitors
        • New carbon monoxide monitors
        • New CCTV cameras
        • New communication devices
        • New fire extinguishers
        • New exit signing
        • New cross passageway doors
      • Refurbish existing tunnel ventilation
      • Provide new tunnel lighting system
      • Upgrade exisiting tunnel over-height truck detection system for State Route 376 WB
      • Provide oil/water seperator and hazardous spill containment tank
      • Mill and re-surface tunnel roadway

  • Construction Cost - $49,500,000
  • Proposed Construction Schedule
    • Begin – Spring 2012
    • Complete – July 25, 2014
