This portal was developed as a resource tool for all information regarding traffic signals in Pennsylvania.
Introduction
Traffic Adaptive Systems provide traffic signal timing that efficiently changes based on traffic conditions and maximizes the traffic flow. Traffic Adaptive Systems are different from Traffic Responsive Systems (also known as Closed Loop Systems) because they do not rely on previously determined traffic timing thresholds. Traffic Adaptive Systems typically have detectors that gather traffic information and use of algorithms to logically adjust the signal timing based upon the current traffic demand. Traffic Adaptive Systems provides the Department with opportunities to begin to use technology to effectively manage key traffic signal corridors.
Current ARLE Programs
This is how the Automated Red Light Enforcement (ARLE) works within the City of Philadelphia:
First Image: Photograph is captured from the rear approach showing: the scene of the violation including the back of the violating vehicle in front of the violation line; one or more visible red light signals; and a clear image of the license plate of the offending vehicle, all from the single, base image.
Second Image: Photograph shot is also captured from the rear approach showing: the scene of the violation including the back of the violating vehicle after the rear axle has crossed the stop line and the vehicle has illegally entered the intersection; one or more visible red light signals; and a clear image of the license plate of the offending vehicle, all from the single, base image.
PennDOT's ARLE funding program was established in 2010, with the intent of using the extra revenue generated by ARLE to help fund transportation projects focusing on safety throughout Pennsylvania. For more information regarding the ARLE funding program, please see the links below:
