SECTION 1041 — SCARIFICATION
1041.1 DESCRIPTION —
This work is scarifying the existing concrete bridge decks to a 1/4-inch depth, or as indicated, in preparation for placing a concrete or mortar wearing surface.
1041.3 CONSTRUCTION —
(a) General.
Saw-cutting and chipping with pneumatic hammers may be used to remove surfaces adjacent to parapets and scuppers. Pneumatic hammers not heavier than nominal 30 pound class and triple-headed tampers fitted with star drills not less than 2-inch diameter may be used.
Completely remove by hand, power broom, vacuum, or other approved means, all broken concrete and laitance resulting from the scarifying operation and satisfactorily dispose of such waste material. Flushing of this debris will not be permitted. Remove debris at the end of each work day.
Scarify using a self propelled machine capable of preparing 1,000 square yards per day. The equipment used for scarification is required to remove 1/4-inch across the cutting path in one pass and to have a floating type head that allows for deeper cutting in areas of deteriorated concrete. Also, provide equipment capable of locking out the head float.
As an option, scarification of an area or areas of Concrete Bridge Deck Repair may be omitted. However, extend scarification of area adjacent to repairs through the delineating saw-cut.
1041.4 MEASUREMENT AND PAYMENT —
Square Yard
