Southbound Route 8 to 62ND Street Bridge Closed Saturday and Monday in Etna

Pittsburgh, PA

PennDOT District 11 is advising motorists southbound Route 8 to the 62nd Street (Robert D. Fleming) Bridge in the Borough of Etna, Allegheny County, will be closed on Saturday, Oct. 24, and on Monday, Oct. 26.

The closure will occur from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday. Northbound traffic on Route 8 will not be affected and motorists will still be able to access the ramps to Route 28 (northbound and southbound) at the interchange. Signs will be posted to guide motorists during the closure:

Posted Detour
• From southbound Route 8, make right onto Kittanning Street
• At the first traffic signal, make a left onto Route 4019 (Butler Street).
• Follow Butler Street to Bridge Street
• Make a left at the traffic signal onto Bridge Street
• Follow Bridge Street to the on-ramp to Route 8 south/62nd Street Bridge

The closures are necessary to allow crews to install overhead signs and lighting. The $22.5 million Route 28 Etna Phase IV improvement project at the Etna interchange in the Boroughs of Etna, Aspinwall and Sharpburg, and Shaler and O’Hara townships will provide significant improvements, bridge rehabilitation and repairs on northbound Route 28 and the interchange. The project includes bituminous and concrete pavement reconstruction, approach roadway widening, drainage, guide rail, curb, shoulders, highway lighting, signing, pavement marking, bridge reconstruction and rehabilitation on four structures (two of the four bridges are rated structurally deficient: Northbound Route 28 over the 62nd Street bridge ramps and northbound Route 28 over Kittanning Pike. Both will be removed from the SD list upon completion of the project.), wall construction, and other miscellaneous construction on 2.3 miles of northbound Route 28 from about 330 feet south of Route 8 to approximately 400 feet north of Route 1005 (Highland Park Bridge). When completed in fall 2009, the project will reconfigure northbound Route 28 to create a significant congestion and mobility improvement through the interchange area. The prime contractor for the project is Mascaro Contracting of Pittsburgh.

The project represents the fourth phase of a five-phase effort to improve and upgrade Route 28 through the Etna interchange area. The southbound lanes were reconstructed during previous phases of the project. Phase V will be underway in 2010.

PennDOT advises motorists to use caution and slow down when traveling through the area. Work zone safety is everyone’s responsibility. PennDOT also reminds motorists they can log on to 511pa.com or call 511 from any phone to check traffic conditions on major roadways before traveling.
