McKees Rocks Bridge Full Closure This Weekend

Pittsburgh, PA

PennDOT District 11 is advising motorists the McKees Rocks Bridge (Route 3104 between Route 65 to Route 51) in the Borough of McKees Rocks and the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, will be closed to traffic in both directions this weekend, Oct. 23-26.

The full closure will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday and continue around-the-clock through 6 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 26. For most of the weekend, motorists will be detoured using the West End Bridge in both directions. However, the West End Bridge becomes outbound (southbound) only after Steelers games. Therefore, the detour for inbound traffic will change after the game Sunday evening.
Alternate detour for northbound (inbound) McKees Rocks Bridge:
• Take Route 51 east to West End
• At intersection with the West End Bridge, make right onto Route 51/19 (Saw Mill Run Boulevard)
• Take ramp to the outbound Parkway West (I-376)/Banksville Road
• Travel on Banksville Road under Parkway West
• Enter the inbound Parkway West
• Travel through Fort Pitt Tunnel
• Bear left and cross Fort Duquesne Bridge
• Enter northbound Route 65 (Exit 1C)
• End detour

Crews will be conducting concrete repairs, sawing and sealing joints and dams, replacing strip seals, caulking barrier, repairing barrier and roadway spalls, and painting.

The bridge will reopen to a single lane of traffic in each direction on Monday. Single lane traffic will remain in place through mid-November.

Motorists should use caution, allow extra time and expect changing traffic patterns when traveling through the area.

The McKees Rocks Bridge carries Route 3104 over the Ohio River and railroad tracks between Route 65 (Ohio River Boulevard) and Route 51 (Island Avenue). The $6.8 million project to improve the bridge includes: concrete deck, parapet, and expansion dam repairs; sidewalk replacement; pavement markings; zone painting, and other miscellaneous construction. The overall project will be completed in late 2009. The prime contractor is the Odyssey Contracting Corporation of Houston PA.
