Motorists in Delaware County will soon experience a smoother and safer Route 491 (Naamans Creek Road) in Bethel and Lower Chichester townships as the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) moves forward to complete a $9.8 million improvement project.
The second phase of the Route 491 (Naamans Creek Road) improvement project will begin Monday (March 5). Once construction is completed in August, local residents and travelers will have a fully reconstructed roadway with improved drainage and utilities.
The upcoming closure of Route 491 (Naamans Creek Road) signals the start of the second phase of construction. Crews will reconstruct, mill and pave Route 491 between the Delaware state line and Route 261, a distance of 5.5 miles. The project also calls for drainage, signing, pavement marking, driveway, sight distance and turning radius improvements.
During construction, Route 491 motorists traveling in passenger cars and vans will be detoured over Delaware Route 92 (Naamans Road) and Route 261 (Foulk Road). Trucks will continue to be detoured over Delaware Route 92 (Naamans Road) and Route 202.
Residents who live along Route 491 (Naamans Creek Road) between Route 261 (Foulk Road) and the Delaware State line will display tags to allow them to travel through the construction zone to access their properties. Emergency vehicles, school buses, and trash trucks will also be allowed access on the closed portion of Route 491.
Crews began reconstructing Route 491 (Naamans Creek Road) between Route 202 and Route 261 (Foulk Road) in Concord and Bethel township, Delaware County, on March 1, 2011. PennDOT’s contractor completed this section seven months ahead of schedule.
Road-Con, Inc., of West Chester, Pa., is the general contractor on the $9,865,998 project. Construction is expected to finish in August 2012. The project is financed with 100 percent state funds.
