I-579 Crosstown Boulevard Ramp Closures Long-Term Detours Begin this Weekend in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh, PA

PennDOT District 11 is several short–term ramp and long-term overpass closures on I-579 (Crosstown Boulevard) in the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, will begin this weekend, July 8-11.

The following closures will occur:

Short-term from 8 p.m. on Friday, July 8, through 6 a.m. on Monday, July 11 for deck overlay placements
The ramp from the Liberty Bridge (Route 3069) to northbound I-579
Posted detour:
o Continue inbound past the off-ramp to northbound I-579
o Turn right onto Forbes Avenue
o Make left onto Washington Place
o Follow Washington Place to Bigelow Boulevard
o Turn right onto Bigelow Boulevard
o Take ramp from Bigelow Boulevard to northbound I-579
o End detour

The ramp from the westbound Boulevard of the Allies (Route 885) to northbound I-579/I-279 (Parkway North)
Posted detour:
o Take I-376 (Parkway East/Central) west to the Fort Duquesne Bridge
o Cross bridge and bear right onto the Parkway North
o End detour
o Alternate detour for downtown destinations is Grant Street

Long-term from 5 a.m. on Saturday, July 9, continuously through mid-October 2011 for bridge deck replacements
The bridge that carries Seventh Avenue to Washington Place over I-579
Posted detour:
o Turn right from Seventh Avenue onto Grant Street
o Make left onto Sixth Avenue
o Continue on Sixth Avenue to Centre Avenue
o Make left onto Centre Avenue
o End detour at Washington Place

Webster Avenue/Bigelow Boulevard Bridge over I-579 (Connects Sixth Avenue/Chatham Square to Bedford Avenue/Washington Place)
Posted detour:
o Take Sixth Avenue/Chatham Square to Centre Avenue
o Cross over I-579
o Make left onto Washington Place
o End detour

In addition, westbound Forbes Avenue will be closed this weekend from 8 p.m. on Friday through 6 a.m. on Monday in the area of I-579. Eastbound traffic on Forbes Avenue will be reduced to single lane. The westbound closure will occur between Boyd Street and Sixth Avenue; eastbound single lane traffic will occur from Ross Street to Boyd Street. Crews will continue painting the I-579 ramps over Forbes Avenue.
Westbound Detour:
o Turn right onto Boyd Street
o Left onto Diamond Street
o Follow Diamond Street back to Forbes Avenue
o End detour

The $18.7 million Veterans Bridge Preservation Project Phase I includes bridge preservation and rehabilitation, painting structural steel, deck repairs and replacement, latex overlay, structural steel repairs, concrete substructure repairs, bearing replacements, neoprene strip seal dam installation, drainage system repairs, pin and hanger retrofits, highway lighting, signing and pavement markings. The prime contractor for the project is the Trumbull Corporation of Pittsburgh. Construction will conclude in fall 2012.
