 | This is the PennDOT Green Plan Policy. It is a mission statement that explains the Department's commitment to be environmentally responsible as it pursues its vision of assuring safe and efficient intermodal transportation systems in the Commonwealth. The Policy is a result of Governor's Executive Order 1998-1, which stated that state agencies would incorporate environmentally sustainable best management practices into their operations. The Green Plan Policy establishes in six principles how PennDOT will ensure an environmental management system for realizing that vision.
PennDOT is implementing its Green Plan Policy through a variety of projects and processes designed to enhance environmentally sound practices. There are pilot projects that explore ways to use recycled materials in roadway and bridge construction. PennDOT facilities are being renovated to incorporate energy efficient lighting and heating systems. There is an initiative to have all roadway winter materials stored under roof to prevent stormwater contamination. All the of the 11 engineering districts have implemented an environmental management in their highway maintenance activities under the ISO 14001 Standard.
The 11 engineering districts are ISO 14001 registered by an independent third party that certifies the environmental management programs meet the ISO standard. PennDOT has held ISO registrations since 2002 |
