Approximately 6300 raw traffic counts are collected each year in Pennsylvania by PennDOT, the Metropolitan Planning Organizations and Rural Planning Organizations. This data includes traffic volumes, vehicle classification (automobile and commercial) and truck weight. The Internet Traffic Monitoring System (iTMS) provides traffic volume data through an interactive web application. The “Pennsylvania Traffic Data Book” documents procedures for developing reliable and comparable Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT) estimates by applying current traffic expansion factors to sample traffic counts.
Highway system length and travel information is published annually in the Pennsylvania Highway Statistics. The information is compiled from the Department’s Highway Performance Monitoring System (HPMS). HPMS is a Federally mandated data reporting program which provides the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) with consistent State highway information that is used for the assessment of the nation’s highways, apportionment of federal funds and national transportation system planning. The Highway Functional Classification and National Highway System networks are also maintained in the HPMS.
