Highway Beautification/Adopt-A-Highway - Adopt and Beautify |

Flowers placed along the roadway to create a more attractive drive |
SUCCESS
Pennsylvania, known since the days of founder William Penn as Penns Woods, is home to over 1,700 varieties of native flora. |
Each year, PennDOT receives hundreds of letters from traveling customers writing to say thanks for the colorful wildflower patches planted along roadsides or in median strips--ususally along limited access or interstate routes. |
PennDOT initiated its first statewide wildflower-planting effort in 1990, and this program has truly bloomed with benefits for Pennsylvania. The plantings enhance the attractiveness of Pennsylvania's roadsides and landscapes and help to increase environmental awareness. Wildflowers also reduce visible litter and mowing demands. |
PennDOT must balances request for beautiful flowers along the roadsides with the need to improve the actual roadway surfaces. Of course, maintaining the safety and rideability of the Pennsylvania's highways and bridges is critically important and priority one. Thanks to volunteers who have adopted sections to beautify, Pennsylvania motorists can have both --- good roads and great vistas. |
CITIZEN INVOLVEMENT | |
Volunteers have an opportunity to expand upon PennDOT's planting efforts through the Adopt And Beautify Program, a public/private partnership to cultivate wildflowers and/or other approved plantings along our state roadways. |
 | Under Adopt And Beautify, groups or individuals commit to planting and maintaining a section of highway for at least two years. In return, PennDOT places a sign at the location recognizing the group for its beautification efforts. | |
 | Interchange areas and traffice islands are also available for adoption under the Adopt and Beautify. What a wonderful way to say welcome to Pennsylvania and to your community! |
SAFETY | |
As usual, safety is a top priority. All participants must abide by the Department's safety requirements and wear gloves while removing litter. Gloves will be provided by PENNDOT. Participants must be at least 8 years of age, and those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. |
