Projects
Mansfield Bridge

In Tioga County, Pennsylvania, not far from the New York border, PennDOT is currently engaged in a Phase III data recovery at the Mansfield Bridge Site. The archaeological investigations are part of PennDOT's efforts to improve and realign Routes 11/15.

Mansfield ExcavationDuring earlier studies at the Mansfield Bridge site, test excavations revealed evidence of two distinct occupations dating to the Late Archaic and Middle/Late Woodland Periods. Both components were found to be in good context, with the potential to yield significant information about the prehistory of the Tioga Valley, and were recommended as eligible for inclusion in the National Register. When PennDOT was unable to
avoid the site in its project building alternatives, Phase III investigations were initiated to mitigate the adverse effects.

Artifacts recovered from the site suggest that stone tool production and maintenance were common at the site. Occupations were probably limited to short term base camps where hunting, fishing, and gathering were important activities.Projectile Points from Mansfield
