Archival Resources
Cultural Resources, The Pennsylvania State Archives, and You

The Pennsylvania State Archives is home to well over 150 million pages of documents, rolls of microfilm, and special collection items (these items range from photographs to maps to audio recordings). It is all to possible to spend a lifetime researching the abundance of material which can be found there, so Cultural Resources has compiled general information from the most pertinent
record groups and manuscript groups in the archives. These files will hopefully assist in directing individuals researching transportation and transportation related topics, with the special effort made to winnow out those groups which do not pertain to PENNDOT or Cultural Resources. The resulting web page is arranged in 8 major categories, each of which contains both manuscript groups and record groups.

The above links will take you to a listing of both manuscript groups and record groups which may help you in researching these topics. Included with each is a basic description of the collection (it includes the dates of the collection, where in the state the information is from, and the type of information which can be found) along with what may be found in each. If you would like what is usually a more in depth description, click on the provided links, and you will be taken to the PA Archives site for the collection. Happy researching and best of luck!!!

*** If you need further assistance in researching you area of interest, the Pennsylvania State Archives has an online list of historical and genealogical societies that are listed by county.

***Also, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission has an online bookstore which lists published guides to the archives.
