Engineering Section Responsibilities

PennDOT’s Bureau of Rail Freight engineers provide technical and administrative advice to rail users and the public. They also supply guidance to state grant recipients regarding department policies and American Railroad Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association standards and requirements. The bureau supervises state-assisted rail rehabilitation and construction projects through the review of construction specifications, contract proposals and estimated costs. Also, the bureau establishes strategy to manage statewide inspection of rehabilitation and construction projects. Engineers also assist in selecting state Rail Freight Assistance Program and Capital Budget Transportation Assistance Program grants, as well as finalizing projects’ closeout and funding.
